A news brief in a Normand newspaper about a farmer's daughter who is a dreamer married to a doctor and who bored of the dull life in the countryside, takes one lover after another, falls into debt and finally commits suicide. Flaubert takes up the challenge to write a novel about this title subject. Madame Bovary not only represents the dissatisfaction of unhappily married women from the 19th century to the present day wives in the American serial "Desperate Housewives" but is a masterpiece about one of the greatest of human misfortunes : the feeling of having messed up one's life.
